This is usually designed to strengthen their social, civic, business and community building skills. The duration for the training is normally a week long but programs that involve community workshops or internships can take up to two months. Meanwhile, some non-profit organizations offers deserving students at risk with limited funding options renewable scholarships. Most of the scholarships are, however, often tied to circumstance. All recipients are therefore required to periodically fill various questionnaires and attend seminars to evaluate whether they qualify for the scholarships. But student leaders who receive scholarships from individuals can get them based on varying provisions.

Students in every part of the world are usually receiving scholarships for the purpose of furthering their education. These scholarships are given depending on the range of criteria which usually reflects the values and purposes of the person, organization or institution who founded the award. Unlike loans given to students, scholarships do not have to be paid back once given. There are so many scholarships from several sponsors that are awarded every year.
In most cases scholarships are given to students with special qualification, such as academic, athletic or artistic talents. These awards are also available for those students who are planning to pursue a particular area of study, who are members of groups which are underrepresented, those who live in a particular geographical area or those who really need financial aid. Scholarships are usually divided into the following classes.
• Value based-These types of scholarships are given to students who are determined by their various abilities i.e. academic abilities, athletics, artistic, or any other ability. The issue of financial need is not applicable in this kind of scholarships. The real value of the money may be insignificant but the scholarship is only meant to give the students motivation and promote them in those abilities.
• Need based- In this kind of scholarships, the students who have problems in raising fee for their educations are being considered. The primary factor in determining those who receive the scholarships is the student and family financial situation. These scholarships are usually meant to cover all or part of the tuition and may even cover the living costs. There is a likelihood that those who founded the award did that with the aim of catering for the financially needy students.
• Sociology based scholarships- in this award; those students who qualify to get the money are determined by their ethnicity i.e. race, religion, or even national origin. Also additional factors can be considered so as to determine those who get the award.
• General scholarships- these scholarships are given for some other reasons that are not mentioned above. Example of some of the reasons is where some organizations gives scholarships to the employee’s children or it can also be based on academic success.
• Some scholarships require the student to work for a certain employer for a period of time that will be specified so as he/she may get the scholarship.
There are various ways that people can use to obtain scholarships, and this include getting information from home region for example by inquiring from local persons and organizations.
Another option is by checking with guidance counselors in schools since they can be a great source for local scholarships. Students should also check with non-profit organizations who sometimes give out the scholarships. Community foundations i.e. counties, cities or regions have a local foundation that is aimed at giving money inform of scholarships to students. Other areas of consideration are churches, chamber of commerce, volunteer organizations and some schools and universities.
